Did you know that all that is keeping you safe between you and the road is 4 small patches of rubber about the size of your hand? these 4 small areas are the contact surfaces between tyre and road and as you can imagine the tyres need to be in good condition and properly inflated.

To keep you safe regular checks and maintenance will not only make the tyres last longer but more importantly help to keep you and your family safe on the roads and on the right side of the law.

Points to note are:

You must stick to the same size and type of tyre, ideally stick to the same brand and pattern as this not only helps to keep noise and vibration down but could adversly affect handling if you don't.

Some basic LEGAL requirements are:

  • Tyres must compatible with the other tyres on the car and in good condition.
  • Tyres must be correctly inflated to the manufacturers specified pressure
  • Tread depth must be above the legal minimum which for passenger vehicles is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band in the centre 3/4 of the tread and around the entire circumference of the tyre.

You don't have to carry a spare, however, it is highly recommended that you do and that it is in good condition.

Other points worth noting are that if you are buying a new car don't assume that there will be a full size spare wheel and tyre in the boot. It is becoming increasingly common for a manufacturer to supply a non-standard or skinny spare, and some only provide a can of sealant!.
